(This was a question I came across that you may enjoy.)
Also, after FTP, do I have to unzip files before I put them in my sites plugin directory, or can I just drop and drag the folder? Thanks.

Unless you have a shell account (so you can run an unzip program on the host computer) you have to unzip before you FTP.

Not familiar with that hosts servers, or the need to manually upload plugins for Wordpress, but generally you unzip files before uploading them to your server.
On our servers, our free Wordpress is installed with just 'one click'.
Hope this in someway helps.

Providing you upload it to the right location where you want it to be you can use hostgator’s file manager to unzip the file if you want to go that route. It has a build in compressor / decompressor that will handle zip’s gzip, etc. You will also want to check the file permission settings afterward to verify they are ok. Sometimes unzipping on the server will unzip to a little unusual file permission setting, but not always.
Wordpress and wordpress plugins tend to be rather small in size, so unzipping to your local pc, and then ftp’ing is usually the more common method. Unless you have a dial up connection this should not be an issue.
Good luck!
