A friend in another state is paying me to take her math exams, which are administered online. I am afraid that the instructor will see my IP and realize that it is not local. Is it possible for me to make my IP temporarily appear as one from a different location? To hide the IP, could I use a proxy?

Proxy servers like Tor will hide your IP, but it is very unlikely that the professor can see the IP of which it is submitted, and even if they can they more then likely won’t be able to track where it is coming from.
tl;dr If they ask her why her IP is so far away, tell her to say she was using tor a proxy server.

You can change your ip address and will appear from another location. I use IP Privacy to get another proxy.

Well you could use a proxy server but I think it is unlikely that anyone would check to see the location of your IP address. The location databases are not 100% accurate anyway – it depends on the ranges that your ISP uses.
If you use a proxy server you will need to find a local one. But as a poster says if you use TOR for security or a commercial security program your IP address will be masked anyway. (Tell your friend to say they use TOR if questioned)

Tor is not the best solution. I have tested it with a number of sites and some have tracked all the way back to my actually IP.
