How can I trace the ip address an email is being sent from? Other than using headers.?

by Tim on June 20, 2009

I got an email from someone named anonymous. How can I trace the ip address of this person. I can't just view the header because it was sent from a gmail address. Is there anything undetectable that I can place in an email that will tell me the ip address when the person replies?

Only by looking at the header can you get the IP address, never heard of anything to send in an email so you can obtain the IP address when the person replies, apart from a virus.
The IP address will contain very little information, probably of no use for you to trace it anyway.

If you do not have header then you can not trace it.
You can always try here:

http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/email-tracking/email-header.php
http://www.find-ip-address.org/email-search/find-email.php

but they require email header to be able to trace sender.

You must first get the sender's IP address from the email header and after you did that you can check it out with any IP tracer like this one http://www.get-ip.com

The headers are the only way unless you can involve the police and have records retrieved from ISPs for the sender's details. But you'd still need the headers to do it.
